CALLING ALL THOSE WHO ARE CURRENTLY GROWING A TINY HUMAN!

Welcome to pregnancy and motherhood! The rollercoaster ride with no seat belts!

So you have made it through the last few months of eating everything in sight and then puking it up again (or maybe you were one of the lucky ones who escaped morning sickness!) and now suddenly your emotions are all over the place!

One minute you are feeling high on life and super excited about meeting your baby, but then the next minute Sally from work starts telling you about her 3 day ‘labour from hell’ and you feel the anxiety and the dread start creeping in. You start asking yourself:

How on earth am I actually going to get this baby out?

Is birth as awful as it looks on TV?

Am I allowed to have a c section? Just because I want to?

Your antenatal appointments are few and far between and you really wish you had someone there for you all the time to ask all the questions you have about labour, birth and motherhood. Your friends tell you that parenthood is the hardest job in the world. And you start worrying about not being a good mum….

What if I don’t know what to do?

What if it doesn’t come naturally?

What if I don’t bond with my baby?

And you have no idea what to expect! You feel anxious about the unknown. And there is no turning back now!

Every new parent you speak to will tell you that NOTHING can prepare you for it.

Pregnancy to parenthood

The transition to motherhood is one of, if not THE biggest psychological, emotional and physical transformations that a woman goes through.

And yet there seems to be a huge lack of quality antenatal education and postnatal support. Women are expected to ‘get on with it’ and give up control over their own bodies. Post birth, women are told that ‘all that matters is a healthy baby’. But women matter too. Our feelings matter! And how we feel about our birth experiences matters.

In my experience of supporting women and couples in my capacity as both an antenatal teacher and a psychotherapist, I have come to realise that it is not how a baby is born that has the biggest impact on a new mother, but how she feels about her birth experience.

From my professional experience I have noticed a recurring theme of  ‘disempowerment’ which suggests a need for women to feel empowered during labour and birth. My research into empowerment and maternal mental health has led me back to university where I am currently carrying out a research project on this topic.

Having reviewed the existing research, I believe that in order to experience empowerment during labour, women need to have a deeper understanding of how our minds and emotions work, an understanding of how we can support our bodies to birth our babies and to feel practically prepared.

I feel there needs to be a holistic antenatal course which prepares women and couples psychologically, emotionally, physically and practically for birth and parenthood.

Will we be covering hypnobirthing?

We will be covering hypnobirthing theory, tools and techniques so you can feel confident that you will be able to master the breathing and relaxation tools and techniques taught on most hypnobirthing courses. You will also have access to downloadable hypnosis for birth mp3s to support your preparation at home.

As well as hypnobirthing, we will also be covering mindfulness, mental and emotional resilience and key elements from other theories which will help you to deepen your understanding of how our minds work, and how we can use this understanding to have a truly empowering birth, postnatal and parenting experience.

The classes, the coaching and the community you will have access to in The Empowered Birth Club will offer a holistic way to prepare for birth and the postnatal period mentally, emotionally, physically and practically.

Why is an empowered birth experience important?

The circumstances of how a baby is born are not actually what has the biggest impact on a new mother.  What matters is how empowered a women feels during her birth experience. When women feel dis-empowered, out of control and unable to escape a traumatic experience, they are more likely to experience birth trauma, PTSD, postnatal depression and other associated issues.

I want to reach and help as many women and couples as I can and help them to have empowered birth experiences. I believe that a deeper understanding of our minds is essential to having an empowering birth and start to parenthood, and I believe this understanding of our mind and emotions will reduce the risk of postnatal mental health issues.

The content in this course will leave you feeling more empowered, mentally and emotionally resilient and physically and practically prepared for labour, birth and parenthood.

Can Dads and birth partners come to the classes?

Absolutely! Giving birth is a team effort and we will be covering lots of content specifically for Dads and birth partners to help them prepare for your baby’s birth and parenthood. Often Dads and birth partners are not aware of the hugely important role they have to play on the day and we will ensure that all Dads and birth partners who join the club will walk away with a complete toolkit for birth enabling them to be the best support to you.

So are you ready to discover how you can experience an empowered birth?
